Polycom updates RealPresence app for Android tablets

RealPresence

Polycom has updated their RealPresence application for Android, bringing support for even more tablets, and new features like smart pairing technology, content sharing, and SVC (Scalable Video Coding) format support. Before you click the link to install this one, take a few minutes to see exactly what the RealPresence app is.

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

This isn't regular video chat where you goof off with your friends or talk dirty to each other. RealPresence is an enterprise video conferencing solution, and it requires and it requires the proper infrastructure to run on. It's designed for professionals who need to speak with each other, in real-time, securely. As the video you'll find after the break explains, industries from healthcare to construction have a need to conference remotely, and when video is involved things are more efficient. When things get more efficient, we all benefit.

Android adoption for the enterprise has always paled when compared to the consumer space, or to Apple's iOS. Applications like RealPresence can change that, and expand the choices made when it's time to buy equipment. Jump past the break to see the mentioned video, and read the press release.

Live from the Connecting the next billions keynote

Mozilla's Gary Kovacs has been harping on this idea of connecting the next billion or so people to the internet all week -- it's the one of the driving philosophies behind Firefox OS. Nokia is looking to bring down the cost of entry to the mobile web with the 105 and 301. Then there's operations like Qtel and Bharti Airtel, that provide cellular service across the developing world and in emerging markets. These companies are all looking to put the democratizing power of the web in the pockets of people across the globe and they're all here at Mobile World Congress 2013 to discuss just how they plan to do that and why it's so important. To find out what these CEOs, including Stephen Elop, Dr. Nasser Marafih (Qtel) and Sunil Mittal (Bharti Airtel) have to say, check back in at the time below.

Got Me A Baller: Keri Hilson On Vacay With NBA Ballin? Boyfriend...

Got Me A Baller: Keri Hilson On Vacay With NBA Ballin? Boyfriend Serge Ibaka: R&B singer Keri Hilson hasn?t dropped any records in a minute? Maybe it?s cause she?s taking a break and getting her cuddle on with her Boo thang NBA baller Serge Ibaka. Serge plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder. We?re hearing that the couple didn?t attend any All-Star events, but instead traveled to Cabo San Lucas for a nice vacay.

From the looks of things the two woke up to a beautiful view of the ocean, sandy beaches and palm trees that set the mood. We heard rumors of a relationship between Ibaka and Hilson back in November.

Fan Male: The Fellas Follow The Stars, Too

This article was written by teen reporters from The Mash, a weekly publication distributed to Chicagoland high schools.

By Victoria Gonzalez, Riverside Brookfield, Rosemary Anguiano, Whitney Young and Jessica Hawkins

Directioners and Beliebers, move aside! Apparently, star-struck girls aren?t the only teens who go crazy over celebrities. Fanboys are here and they?re coming on just as strong.

Fangirls have been around since the dawn of boy bands. You?ve seen them ? they?re the girls who pass out when they come in contact with their ?future husbands.?

But many people seem to overlook the fact that it isn?t just girls who are covering their bedroom walls with posters and pinups from "Tiger Beat" ? the boys are right there with them.

Meet some of the guys who can geek out over the stars too.

Shawn, Sophomore, Lane Tech
Fan of: Ryan Gosling

Contrary to what people might think, guys can be fanboys of other guys as well as girls. Logan is a perfect example. His favorite actor? Ryan Gosling.

At first, Logan thought that Gosling was just a ?pretty boy? who relied on his looks to gain popularity. However, after watching the movie ?Drive,? Logan was able to appreciate Gosling?s acting ability.

?After ?Drive,? he?s proven that he can almost do any kind of performance,? Logan said. ?He was hilarious in ?Crazy, Stupid, Love? and spellbindingly great in ?The Ides of March.??

Since ?Drive,? Logan?s goal has been to watch every movie Gosling has starred in. He even started a DVD collection and is up to seven movies. While his guy friends occasionally make jokes about him liking Gosling, he knows he?s not the only one. ?My friends and I all agree that 99 percent of guys have a man crush, and mine is Gosling,? Logan said.

Sebastian, Senior, Jones
Fan of: Lady Gaga

Iniguez is more than gaga for Lady Gaga, he?s arguably one of her biggest and most dedicated fans. As with any other fearless fanboy, Iniguez isn?t ashamed of his obsession. In fact, friends and relatives use his knowledge to keep up with the latest Gaga news.

His obsession began when Gaga was considered just a mere up-and-coming pop singer. Iniguez said he feels Gaga is sincere and cares about her fans. He draws encouragement and inspiration from her.

?I have been supporting her since the beginning, and I try to share her messages of love and acceptance,? Iniguez said.

In the past, Iniguez has dressed up as his idol for Halloween. He even made a replica of the notorious meat dress Gaga wore during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

?When she canceled the (?Born This Way?) tour (which would have included two shows at the United Center last week), I tweeted her and sent her some of my artwork,? Iniguez said.

Though Gaga has yet to respond to his tweets, he still holds out hope she?ll contact him one day. He?s also optimistic that Gaga will reschedule her tour, which she postponed because of a hip injury, according to reports. ?I am more concerned about her health and well being than the concerts,? he said. ?There is always next time.?

Luke, Senior, Whitney Young
Fan of: Taylor Swift

While Taylor Swift has her fair share of fans, Danielson is among the biggest. Just a few years ago Danielson favored bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Rise Against, but now he finds himself listening to Swift on a daily basis. He also keeps updated on T-Swizzle news by surfing the Internet for the latest stories surrounding the blonde star.

?I do talk about her a lot, but it turns into a huge kind of joking thing between me and my friends,? Danielson said. ?We tease each other for liking her.?

While some of his friends are right beside him as fanboys, others find it funny that his music taste has changed so drastically. Even one of his close friends, Emily Bish, a senior at Whitney Young, was a little surprised when she learned of Danielson?s love for Swift. ?It really became apparent when he would give me rides home and blast ?We Are Never (Ever) Getting Back Together,? ? Bish said.

While Danielson has never (ever) attended one of Swift?s concerts, she has found a special place in his heart. ?I really like the new stuff she has but I also like her older stuff,? he said. ?I just really (like) how she mixes country and pop.?

Santiago, Junior, Riverside Brookfield
Fan of: Jessica Alba

?I am in love with Jessica Alba,? Beltran said. ?Everything about her just drives me wild.?

Beltran expresses his fandom by covering the walls of his room and locker with photos of Alba. ?I have posters of her in my room, I own a calendar that contains different pictures of her every month, and I have seen every movie she?s ever been in,? Beltran said.

He also said she?s a good actress and athlete, and he admires her looks. ?Every time I see her and those beautiful eyes I fall in love all over again,? he said.

Luckily, Beltran hasn?t been heavily teased for his obsession, he said. ?My family likes to tease me for it, but my friends share my beliefs, so it?s all good.? Beltran continues to dream of the day he?ll meet the ?goddess? herself, but for now he passes the time by tweeting her.

Thomas, Senior, Riverside Brookfield
Fan of: Ariana Grande

As a huge fan of Ariana Grande, a cast member of ?Victorious? before it was canceled in the fall, Bojovic has only the sweetest things to say about her. ?She is beautiful, funny, has an amazing voice, and I love her laugh,? he said.

Bojovic shows his fandom by setting pictures of Grande as his phone background and Facebook cover photo. ?I would consider myself a fanboy because I obsess over anything she is in, such as television shows and songs, and because I think she is insanely hot,? he said.

No matter what people say, Bojovic continues to be Grande?s No. 1 fan, ?My friends and family always make fun of me for it and think it is pretty weird how I would pretty much drop dead to meet her,? he said.

Just about anyone who knows Bojovic knows about his love for Grande. ?I think his obsession over (Grande) is pretty funny and interesting to say the least,? said Bojovic?s younger sister, Victoria. ?I have never made fun of him for it?I actually think it is pretty cool.?

Rant: Why doesn't Canada have Prime Ministers on coins?

So we can have Bears, Dinosaurs, Beavers, British Monarchy, Doctors, Trees, Hockey, Football, Hockey Teams, Football Teams, but no John A. Mcdonald, or Pierre Trudeau.

Why is it that the US "gets it", and honors their icons? Is this Canada's inferiority complex/bulimic humility fearing it's ugly head again?

Personally, I find it disgusting.

Study reveals new clues to Epstein-Barr virus

Friday, February 22, 2013

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) affects more than 90 percent of the population worldwide and was the first human virus found to be associated with cancer. Now, researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) have broadened the understanding of this widespread infection with their discovery of a second B-cell attachment receptor for EBV.

The new findings, which currently appear on-line in Cell Reports, reinforce current directions being taken in the development of a vaccine to guard against EBV, and raise important new questions regarding the virus's possible relationship to malaria and to autoimmune diseases.

"Our discovery that CD35 is an attachment receptor for EBV helps explain several previously unsolved observations," explains the study's senior author Joyce Fingeroth, MD, a member of the Division of Infectious Diseases at BIDMC and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.

First discovered in the early 1960s, EBV is one of eight viruses in the human herpesvirus family. The virus affects nine out of 10 people at some point in their lifetimes. Infections in early childhood often cause no disease symptoms, but people infected during adolescence or young adulthood may develop infectious mononucleosis. EBV is also associated with several types of cancer, including Hodgkin's lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and has been linked to certain autoimmune disorders.

"EBV was the first human virus that was discovered to be a tumor virus," explains Fingeroth. "In fact, individuals who have had infectious mononucleosis have a four times increased risk of developing Hodgkin's disease." After the initial infection, the EBV virus remains in a person's body for life.

To gain entry, viruses must first attach to their host cells. For herpesviruses, receptors on the viral envelope become connected to complementary receptors on the cell membrane. In the case of EBV, the virus gains access to the immune system by attaching to primary B cells.

Nearly 30 years ago, Fingeroth and her colleagues discovered that this attachment occurs via the CD21 protein, which until now was the only known B cell attachment receptor for EBV. The recent finding that B cells from a patient lacking CD21 can be infected and immortalized by EBV had indicated that an alternative attachment receptor must exist. The identification of this second receptor -- CD35 -- by Fingeroth's team, led by first author Javier Ogembo, PhD, of BIDMC and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, not only underscores an important finding regarding primary infection but also underscores the importance of EBVgp350/220, (the virus protein that has been found to bind to both attachment receptors) for the development of a vaccine against EBV.

"The EBV glycoprotein gp350/220 is the most abundant surface glycoprotein on the virus," notes Fingeroth, adding that these results further suggest the virus fusion apparatus is the same for both receptors. "An EBV vaccine might be able to prevent infection or, alternatively, greatly reduce a person's risk of developing infectious mononucleosis and EBV-associated cancers, without necessarily preventing the EBV infection itself."

Interestingly, she adds, whereas a human has now been identified to be lacking the CD21 receptor, no persons are known to lack CD35.

"CD35 is a latecomer in evolution and in its current form, exists only in humans," says Fingeroth. "We know that it is often targeted in autoimmune diseases and was recently identified as a malaria receptor. Our new discovery may, therefore, reveal new avenues for the exploration of unexplained links between EBV, autoimmune diseases, malaria and cancer."

Cornell scientists 3D print ears with help from rat tails and cow ears

Science! A team of bioengineers and physicians over at Cornell University recently detailed their work to 3D print lifelike ears that may be used to treat birth defects like microtia and assist those who have lost or damaged an ear due to an accident or cancer. The product, which is, "practically identical to the human ear," according to the school, was created using 3D printing and gels made from living cells -- collagen was gathered from rat tails and cartilage cells were taken from cow's ears. The whole process is quite quick, according to associate professor Lawrence Bonassar, who co-authored the report on the matter,

"It takes half a day to design the mold, a day or so to print it, 30 minutes to inject the gel, and we can remove the ear 15 minutes later. We trim the ear and then let it culture for several days in nourishing cell culture media before it is implanted."

The team is looking to implant the first ear in around three years, if all goes well.

Chinese New Years parade rocks the town of Butte

BUTTE, Mont. -

The Mai-Wah Chinese Museum in Butte put on their annual Chinese New Year?s Celebration Saturday afternoon.

Dori Skrukrud is a volunteer for the celebration and she tells NBC Montana that the celebration has been growing larger and larger every year.

"It's grown and expanded over the years we've had a couple of versions of the dragon and we're lucky enough to have gotten a parade version of the dragon donated by the Taiwanese,? said Skrukrud, Volunteer for the Mai-Wah Museum.

?The dragons have led our parade for a number of years and we have great volunteers that come and do the dragon dance, in fact today we have the Montana Tech basketball team," added Skrukrud.

The parade itself, coordinators say, has become nationally renowned as one of the shortest, loudest and coldest parades in the nation.

NBC Montana spoke with one father-daughter couple and asked them what they were looking forward to the most.

"That I get to see a lot of fireworks and I get to be here with my dad," said Ciarra Ocana, 4th Grader.

"Honestly I was looking forward to hanging out with my daughter and then I heard about the one hundred thousand firecrackers and I was like I?m in," added Paul Keenan, Ocana?s father.

Reports indicated that the firecrackers could be heard throughout the entire town and the grand finale was so big, it set off car alarms, shook windows, and brought a smile to everyone who was watching.

Apple Software Update Could Disable Counterfeit Lightning ...

When they introduced the iPhone 5, Apple switched to a new connector port called Lightning. So, all your iPhone accessories compatible with previous generation iPhones, iPads and iPod Touch models had then become ?worthless? all of a sudden. But, as is usually the case, a new wave of accessories has been born, with the keyword being ?Lightning-compatible.?

But this time the rollout of Lightning accessories has been slower than usual. So what?s the reason behind it? Yeah, you?ve already guessed: Apple?s control of the user experience from end to end.

Accessory maker Mophie has shed some light on how Apple controls the lightning accessory business, and at the same time ensures the consumer gets the user experience they expect from Apple.

As Mophie point outs, when a hardware maker signs up with Apple?s MFI Program for companies that make accessories for Apple products, it actually orders a Lightning connector component from Apple to use in designing the accessory.

Now, the most interesting part is that Apple assigns serial numbers to each accessory manufacturer. These connectors contain authentication chips that communicate with the phones. When the manufacturer submits its accessory to Apple for testing, the Cupertino company recognizes the serial number.

Obviously, the chip can be copied by another company, but it somehow won?t work as well as the one that you get from Apple, Ross Howe, vice president of marketing for Mophie highlights.

Furthermore, Apple could potentially issue a software update that could disable Lightning products that don?t use the chips supplied by the company.
The benefit? From the user?s perspective, the guarantee that ?it just works? and it won?t blast your iPhone?s battery. From Apple?s perspective, it encourages accessory manufacturers to pay the company licensing fees to be part of the MFI program.

Now, putting that into context: Apple?s ?minor? businesses, such as software, music, and iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch accessories, as well as others, combined have generated more revenue than other mobile manufacturers? cellphone sales, Horace Dediu?s chart shows.

Palestinian rally for hunger striker turns violent

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Palestinians clashed with Israeli soldiers on Friday at several demonstrations in the West Bank held to support a prisoner observing an intermittent hunger strike to protest his incarceration.

The Israeli military said about 500 Palestinians threw rocks and rolled burning tires at soldiers who responded with tear gas during the main rally outside Ofer prison in the West Bank. The protesters called for the release of Samer Issawi, who has been on an on-again, off-again hunger strike for several months as he serves time for alleged terror activity.

Protests spread to several other West Bank flashpoints which turned violent as well. Palestinian medics said they treated dozens of people for tear gas inhalation and minor wounds sustained from rubber bullets. Two Israeli soldiers were lightly injured, the military said.

The prisoner issue is an emotional one for Palestinians after decades of conflict with Israel. Palestinians generally view them as heroes, regardless of the reason for their imprisonment ? even when their crimes have involved killing civilians. Last year hundreds of Palestinian prisoners used hunger strikes to seek concessions from Israel.

Issawi, 35, was initially released in 2011 in a prisoner exchange. One Israeli soldier was freed from captivity in Gaza in exchange for more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, many of whom were convicted of being involved in suicide bombings and other deadly attacks.

Some prisoners, like Issawi, were released on condition of travel limits. Israeli Prison Service spokeswoman Sivan Weizman said he was arrested after he violated the terms of his release. She said he was arrested for "terror activity" and sentenced to 26 years, but released in the 2011 prisoner swap after serving only six years.

Issawi is under medical supervision and eats periodically, she said.

Issawi's sister, Shirin, said he has been on hunger strike for 206 days. She said he has only been drinking water since January. She said the prison takes her brother to an Israeli hospital for treatment.

The Palestinian minister of prisoner affairs, Issa Qaraqe, said Issawi began his fast in August and has been observing it intermittently.

Qaraqe said Issawi had lost 35 kilograms (about 77 pounds), has kidney pain and has lost feeling in parts of the right side of his body.

He said there are four prisoners on hunger strike.

Human rights groups have warned of their worsening health.

"If, God forbid, any prisoner dies of hunger strike inside the prison, the situation on the ground will deteriorate," Qaraqe said. "People won't stand for any prisoner to die of a hunger strike."

Mideast envoy Tony Blair issued a statement expressing concern for the prisoner's health. "This issue needs to be resolved quickly in order to avoid a tragic outcome which has the potential to destabilize the situation on the ground," he said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas made an unannounced visit to a separate demonstration for prisoners near Ramallah. He said the prisoner issue would top his agenda in meetings with President Barack Obama, who is expected to visit the region next month.

Last year, hundreds of Palestinian prisoners won multiple concessions from Israel after going on hunger strikes ? some that lasted weeks.

Last week, a Gaza man who carried out the longest-ever hunger strike by a Palestinian prisoner returned home. Akram Rikhawi ended his 103-day hunger strike last July in exchange for Israel's pledged to release him five months earlier than his scheduled release in June.

Rikhawi, 40, served a nine-year sentence for transporting suicide bombers.

Molecular master switch for pancreatic cancer identified, potential predictor of treatment outcome

Feb. 12, 2013 ? A recently described master regulator protein may explain the development of aberrant cell growth in the pancreas spurred by inflammation.

A team from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania profiled gene expression of mouse pancreatic ductal and duct-like cells from different states -- embryonic development, acute pancreatitis and K-ras mutation-driven carcinogenesis -- to find the molecular regulation of these processes.

Broadly speaking, two cellular compartments are important in a normal pancreas, endocrine cells, which produce hormones including insulin, and exocrine cells -- acinar and ductal -- which make and secrete digestive enzymes.

A cover article from the lab of Anil Rustgi, MD, Chief, Division of Gastroenterology, published early online in Genes and Development, details the molecular changes of exocrine cells during inflammation, so-called acinar-ductal metaplasia (ADM), a prelude to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

They used cell lineage tracing to follow what happens to the regulator protein called Prrx1 as cells change characteristics. Another protein, Sox9, which is downstream of Prrx1 in the cell signal pathway, is also important in understanding how pancreatic cancer forms, as the group has established the first link of Prrx1 to Sox9. The findings suggest that Prrx1 and Sox9 influence the emergence of an intermediate cell type that can give rise to cancer.

Inflammation is Key Culprit

Inflammation of the pancreas, or pancreatitis, is a leading reason for hospital admission, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and chronic pancreatitis is a risk factor for cancer of the pancreas. Each year, about 210,000 people in the United States are admitted to the hospital with acute pancreatitis.

Acute pancreatitis is caused by alcohol abuse, gallstones, and autoimmune disorders. When things go wrong, inflammatory pancreatitis happens, and the change from an acute state to a chronic state can lead to cancer.

When a patient recovers from pancreatitis, the change in cell fate reverts to the original cell type. But, if the pancreatitis is chronic, changed cells stay changed.

"We hope that studies like this one that identify key molecules and pathways that govern the cancerous fate of cells can be used as diagnostic predictors of treatment outcome and severity for cancer," says Rustgi.

Hot, smelly cruise ship with 3,143 passengers being towed to Alabama (+video)

The Carnival cruise ship was tilting to one side Monday. Some of the cruise ship passengers say the ship "stinks," and many are sleeping in tents on the deck.

Carnival Cruise Lines President and CEO Gerry Cahill said in a statement Monday that the Carnival Triumph had drifted so far north of its original position that it will be towed to the southern U.S. port, instead of the original plan to take it to Progreso, Mexico.

Cahill said strong Gulf currents caused the Triumph to drift about 90 miles north of its original position off the Yucatan Peninsula.

Cahill's statement said the ship should arrive in Mobile on Thursday and that the change will allow for less complicated re-entry for passengers without passports.

The Carnival Triumph had been floating aimlessly about 150 miles off the Yucatan Peninsula since a fire erupted in the aft engine room early Sunday, knocking out the ship's propulsion system. No one was injured and the fire was extinguished. The ship has been operating on backup generator power since the incident, the statement said.

The ship, which left Galveston, Texas, on Thursday and was scheduled to return there Monday, will instead be towed to Mobile with its 3,143 passengers 1,086 crew members. They are due to arrive in Alabama on Thursday.

One tugboat arrived Monday afternoon, and the other was expected later in the evening, Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen said in an email. The Coast Guard has informed Mexican authorities of the situation in their waters, a spokesman said.

When another Carnival cruise ship, the Legend, rendezvoused with the stranded vessel Monday, supplying Triumph passengers with food and supplies, Texas resident Brent Nutt was able to briefly chat with his wife, Bethany, who could draw a cellphone signal from the visiting cruise line.

Without power, the ship's stabilizers are apparently not working, Nutt told The Associated Press, and the massive liner had been leaning to one side Sunday. By Monday afternoon, the ship seemed more upright, he said.

"She sounded a whole lot better today than she did yesterday," Nutt said about two hours after chatting with his 32-year-old wife.

Passengers were also given food, Nutt said, and some of the bathrooms are working. But the ship is dirty, Nutt said his wife told him.

"There's water and feces all over the floor," Nutt relayed. "It's not the best conditions. You would think Carnival would have something in place to get these people off the ship."

Passengers also are getting sick and throwing up, he said, adding that his wife told him: "The whole boat stinks extremely bad."

A Coast Guard official says rescuers and helicopters based on Alabama's coast will be ready to respond if any medical issues arise among the people aboard the disabled cruise ship.

Melinda Ramos, meanwhile, said her father was laughing when she briefly spoke to him Sunday.

"He might be completely joking, but he said they're sleeping in tents outside," the 19-year-old daughter of Mary and Matt Ramos told The Houston Chronicle.

A similar situation occurred on a Carnival cruise ship in November 2010. That vessel was also stranded for three days with 4,500 people aboard after a fire in the engine room. When the passengers disembarked in San Diego they described a nightmarish three days in the Pacific with limited food, power and bathroom access.

Carnival said in a statement that it had cancelled the Triumph's next two voyages scheduled to depart Monday and Saturday. Passengers aboard the stranded ship will also receive a full refund, the statement said.

SimCity - How I Mayor: Slick Oil City

Good day to you, people of the world! My name is Ross and I?m a balance designer here at Maxis. If you will allow it, I would like to share with you how I mayor. I will do so by building a city that is all about oil.

Day One
To begin, I chose a city that has a high amount of oil in the ground. As soon as I load my city up, I take some time to check out my oil deposits. Before I worry about where my citizens will live, I want to make sure that I have good access to the oil deposits, so I use some dirt roads to outline where my oil pumps will go. I?ll upgrade those to better roads later, but for now I just need something cheap so that I can plan out my city.

Day Two
Well, howdy there y?all! (just getting into character). I?ve got my oil city up and running now. Right now, my oil business is pretty simple. My oil wells pull the oil out of the ground and their trucks deliver it to the trade depots. The oil is then picked up at the depot by a truck to ship to the global market for profit. As you can see, I?ve placed my oil wells and trade depots away from my residential, commercial, and industrial. I don?t want any traffic to get in the way of my oil trucks.

Day Three
Welcome back! Things are going well in my oil city. With the addition of an Oil HQ, my oil business has begun to expand into an oil empire. I?ve started to max out my oil wells in order to maximize the amount of oil that I can pull out of the ground. Harvesting and selling more oil will allow me to upgrade my Oil HQ with modules that will allow me to place refineries and improve how I export.

Day Four
With all that expansion I?ve been able to upgrade my Oil HQ. The first module that I placed is the refining division. That allows me to place oil refineries which can turn my crude oil into plastic or fuel, both of which usually sell for more than crude oil on the global market. So now my task is to convert over from selling oil to selling the more lucrative plastic and fuel.

I place my oil refineries close to my oil wells so that the trucks will have no problem delivering to them. Now I go ahead and add some plastic and fuel lots to my trade depots so that they can start collecting plastic and fuel and selling them to the global market. As I start getting more money I add expansion modules to my refineries to increase my manufacturing throughput. It?s important to remember to add garages to the refineries, too, because without more trucks to carry the goods, all that extra manufacturing power just fills up my refineries faster.

Day Five
Another day, another upgrade on my Oil HQ. This time I added the commerce division. This will allow me to use the more fancy trade port instead of the trade depots. Not only do the trade port storage lots hold a lot more goods, but the trade port can be expanded with a train station or boat dock so that I won?t have to rely on global market trucks from the highway so much anymore. That?s great ? now I won?t start pulling my hair out when there?s a traffic jam at the entrance to the highway and I?m running low on money.

I?ve done a great job of collecting, refining, and selling all this oil, but I?m not sure that anyone would want to live here if this was a real city. Let?s look at all the ground pollution that I?ve caused. Oh, golly ? look at all the sick people, too. Maybe I should think about investing in some health care for all my Sims? Nah they can take care of themselves, right?

Big Ten Football Coaches and Athletic Directors ask for tabling of three new NCAA recruiting rules

The Big Ten conference Monday became the first college athletics body to issue a statement against new NCAA recruiting rules that are slated to go into effect over the summer of 2013. The statement originated from a previously scheduled meeting of Big Ten football coaches and athletic directors.?

"We reviewed the 26 Rules Working Group proposals acted upon by the NCAA Board of Directors in January, some of which will become effective as early as July 1, 2013," the conference said in a release.

"While we applaud the work that has been done to date, we are very concerned that the timeline proposed for implementation of the proposals does not allow sufficient time for the Football Recruiting Subcommittee of the NCAA Leadership Council to thoughtfully consider the impact of the proposals."

"We are specifically concerned with the following three proposals and ask that they be tabled along with Proposal 13-2," the conference wrote:

"Proposal 11-2: Athletics Personnel ? Limitations on the Number and Duties of Coaches ? Elimination of Recruiting Coordination Functions

Proposal 13-3: Recruiting ? Deregulation of Modes and Numerical Limitations on Communication

Proposal 13-5-A:? Recruiting ? Elimination of Printed Recruiting Materials and Video/Audio Legislation."

The only proposal not listed, Proposal 13-2, was already tabled by the Board of Directors. That proposal would establish July 1 following a recruits sophomore year as a "uniform recruiting date," according to the NCAA.

Proposal 11-2 would allow any member of a programs' staff to perform recruiting duties that are currently only allowed to be performed by assistant and head coaches. 13-3, meanwhile, would allow?unlimited?text messaging to college recruits, and 13-5A will eliminate restrictions on what printed materials schools can send prospective recruits.

"We have serious concerns whether these proposals, as currently written, are in the best interest of high school student-athletes, their families and their coaches.? We are also concerned about the adverse effect they would have on college coaches, administrators and university resources," the conference said.

"We look forward to working with the NCAA toward improving the game, the recruiting process and the overall college football experience for all student-athletes."
