City People: Raquel Filmanowicz | Urban Milwaukee

Raquel Madrid was just 18 when she married and moved with her husband from urban Chicago to Waukesha. It was a culture shock. She cried a lot, she admits.

It was 1983 and her husband, Kevin Berkel worked for Marriott Food Services and had been transferred to Carroll College in the heart of Waukesha. So Raquel Berkel figured she would attend college there. But it wasn?t easy.

?I think I was the only woman of color ? ok, maybe there were three,? she recalls. ?It was a big culture shock and I did not feel supported by the faculty or staff, and being married and living off-campus didn?t help,? she says. She missed her inner-city Chicago family and friends.

A year or so passed. She left Carroll to work at Boston Store and do some modeling, when ? Bingo! ? a baby was coming and Raquel was only 20-years-old. They named their bundle Cassandra. Later on came a son, Nick.

More tough decisions came along. Raquel divorced, then later married Steve Filmanowicz, a longtime aide to John Norquist who now is editorial director for Marquette University. ??Folks are curious as to why I would drop a name like Madrid, to take the name of Filmanowicz,? she says. ?My Mexican family has never really been able to pronounce it, much less spell it. The best part of receiving cards from my mom, is seeing how she spells Steve (usually as ?Estebe?), or Filmanowicz (?Philmanowiz?).?

No, she wasn?t named after the 60?s movie star Raquel Welch. Her mom didn?t have a name picked out for her, but when a Filipino nurse came in the room and said that the baby looked like a ?Raquel,? that was that.

In the years after she first became a mother, Raquel worked hard to build a career. She returned to school at Cardinal Stritch where she obtained an undergraduate degree in business administration while working at Rockwell Automation in their community affairs office. The skills she learned gave her a foundation for her later work with the City of Milwaukee Health Department. There, she spent six years as the communication manager and then was promoted to Health Operations Administrator, where she served for four years. Her staff was large (257), and together they addressed teen pregnancy, infant mortality, and obesity.

?It?s the H1N1 vaccination response (for Influenza A virus) that remains most vivid in my mind,? she says. ?Going from developing strategies and preparing for severe health crises is one thing, but to implement those strategies in times of need?it was definitely one of the most community-wide health issues that we dealt with.?

In her spare time, she planned the twenty-one million dollar budget for the health department. ??Working with Mayor Barrett and United Way of Greater Milwaukee, we established a goal of reducing teen pregnancy by 46% by the year 2015.? The health department recently announced the fifth straight year of a decline in Milwaukee?s teen birth: it has dropped by 36 percent since 2006.

In a 2010 article in the Business Journal, she set an example for her staff and community when she spoke publicly about her fitness and health goals, and about growing up in inner-city Chicago. ?I didn?t grow up in the best neighborhood, so my mom was always afraid to let me play outside, and there wasn?t always extra money for me to join organized sports of leagues,? she recalled. ?Factor that in with an unbalanced diet, and you have the classic recipe for being at risk for pediatric obesity. I wasn?t obese, but certainly I was overweight for my age.?

This year, Filmanowicz left her job with the health department and took on a position as Vice-President of Community Affairs with BMO Harris Bank (formerly M&I, which as purchased by BM)) but she says the job continues her interest in community issues. Working at the bank?s Water Street building, she?s responsible for overseeing strategic sponsorships and programmatic grants for local area nonprofits. It?s notable that BMO Harris has made a multi-year pledge to combat Milwaukee?s infant mortality.

Perhaps some day you?ll see her walking in the Astor Street area where she and her family of five live. She and Steve have a six-year-old daughter, Lily, while Cassandra is now 17 and Nick is eleven. They all attend different schools but worship together at St. Paul?s Episcopal Church on Marshall Street. ?On a day to day basis, our world here in Milwaukee is about a two mile radius from our home,? she says. ?It doesn?t get any better than a seven minute commute, which includes picking up a kid from school.?

You would expect someone who worked for the health department to keep her own family healthy. Her children are active in diverse sports. Raquel cooks healthy meals at home, but she notes that this is a tougher challenges for families in poorer neighborhoods with higher rates of unemployment, teen pregnancy and infant mortality. ?In these zip codes, you?re more likely to see corner stores selling chips and soda, and if they do sell fresh food, it?s two to three times higher priced than at bigger chain grocery stores,? she says. She echoes a phrase she once heard: ?It?s expensive to be poor.?

In 2010, Raquel Filmanowicz made the list of the Business Journal?s ?40 Under 40,? honoring younger leaders in town. She?s made quite a transition from her weepy days in Waukesha. And she hasn?t slowed down yet. In the summer, she trains for a half marathon, but most times of the year you may spot her doing a 5 mile run, or a quick 20 minute walk down to the lake and back home.

You Can Take A Skyrim Class At A Texas University

Here Be Dragons

We had one comic book course when I went to college and I didn?t even get to take it. Now one university in Texas is offering a course on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Maybe I need to go back to school??

The course is titled ?Scandinavian Fantasy Worlds: Old Norse Sagas and Skyrim? and you can take it at Rice University, a private institution in Houston, Texas with?Professor Donna Beth Ellard.

So what will you be learning in ?Scandinavian Fantasy Worlds: Old Norse Sagas and Skyrim??

This course has two goals. First, it introduces students to fantasy as both psychological concept and driving force in gamer culture; and second, using these paradigms, it considers how and why medieval Scandinavia serves as a locus of modern Anglo-American fantasy. To these ends, students will read selections from Old Norse and Old Icelandic sagas (in translation) as they play different quests within Skyrim. While the course begins by identifying moments of intersection between the worlds of the sagas and of Skyrim (inclement environments, supernatural figures, mythologies), the course is not in any means meant to map the former onto the latter. The purpose of establishing these connections is to then consider how elements of medieval Scandinavian culture have been taken out of historical milieu and literary context, morphed into unfamiliar shape, and appropriated towards other fantastic pursuits. We?ll consider the political saga of Skyrim, with its emphasis on Empire and rebellion, as pursuits made possible by way of Scandinavia in order to think through what Scandinavian fantasy worlds are really about and why they resonate with contemporary Anglo-American culture.

I think that should be ?three goals? with the third being ?be awesome.? You think Skyrim will be sold in the campus book shop?

Nokia launches budget Lumia 510: Windows Phone 7.5, 4-inch display and 5-megapixel camera (video)

Nokia launches budget Lumia 510 Windows Phone 75, 4inch display and 5megapixel camera

Confirming all those rumors we've been hearing, Nokia has officially taken the wraps off its latest budget smartphone, the Lumia 510 -- slotting it somewhere between the Asha range and the Lumia 610. With the notable exception of the 4-inch (480 x 800) screen, which is a tad larger than its slightly more accomplished Windows Phone sibling, the other specs are very much in line with its low-cost stance: there's a single 5-megapixel shooter at the back (no front-facer), a lowly 800MHz Qualcomm processor, 256MB RAM and 4GB of non-expandable storage. We'll be bringing you further details as the story unfolds. In terms of the OS, it'll ship with WP Mango but we're told it will be upgraded to Windows Phone 7.8 at some point in the future.

Puppies don't pick up on yawns: Dogs, like humans, show a gradual development of susceptibility to contagious yawning

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Do you get tired when others yawn? Does your dog get tired when you yawn? New research from Lund University in Sweden establishes that dogs catch yawns from humans. But not if the dogs are too young. The study, published in Springer's journal Animal Cognition, found that, like humans, dogs show a developmental trend in susceptibility to contagious yawning. While dogs above seven months of age catch human yawns, younger dogs are immune to yawn contagion.

Contagious yawning is not just a sign of sleepiness or boredom. Previous research has shown contagious yawning in humans, adult chimpanzees, baboons and dogs, and suggests that it can be used as a measure of empathy. Empathy, mimicking the emotional responses of others, is difficult to measure directly, but contagious yawning allows assessment of a behavioral empathetic response, the researchers say.

While the development of contagious yawning in human children has seen much research, this is the first study to investigate its development in another species.

Elainie Alenk?r Madsen, PhD, and Tomas Persson, PhD, researchers at Lund University, engaged 35 dogs in Denmark, aged between four and 14 months, in bouts of play and cuddling and observed the dogs' responses when a human repeatedly yawned or gaped or performed neither of the two expressions. Only dogs above seven months of age showed evidence of contagious yawning.

This pattern of development is consistent with that in humans, who also show a developmental increase in susceptibility to yawn contagion, with children typically beginning to yawn contagiously at the age of four, when a number of cognitive abilities, such as accurate identification of others' emotions, begin to clearly manifest. One interpretation that Madsen and Persson suggest is that the results reflect a general developmental pattern, shared by humans and other animals, in terms of affective empathy and the ability to identify others' emotions. Given that contagious yawning may be an empathetic response, the results suggest that empathy and the mimicry that may underlie it develop slowly over the first year of a dog's life.

There was some evidence that the researchers may have transferred the emotion that yawning reflects (sleepiness) to the dogs, as nearly half of the dogs responded to yawning with a reduction in arousal, to the extent that the experimenter needed to prevent a number of dogs from falling asleep.

Research with adult humans and other primates suggest that individuals are more likely to yawn contagiously to those with whom they have close emotional bonds. Madsen and Persson tested the dogs with both an unfamiliar experimenter and their owner, but found no evidence that the puppies preferentially yawned in response to the yawns of the human with whom they were emotionally close. Since this is also the case for young human children, the researchers suggest that in species that show an empathy-based social modulatory effect on contagious yawning, this behavior only emerges at later stages of development.

Link found between Alzheimer's disease and protein regulation in the brain - hope for new treatments

Link found between Alzheimer's disease and protein regulation in the brain - hope for new treatments

Monday, October 22, 2012

A link has been discovered between Alzheimer's disease and the activity level of a protein called eIF2alpha. This has been reported in a new study conducted at the University of Haifa's Sagol Department of Neurobiology, recently published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging. According to Prof. Kobi Rosenblum, head of the Department, altering the performance of this protein via drug therapy could constitute a treatment for Alzheimer's, which is incurable.

Alzheimer's research in recent years has primarily focused on battling the disease once symptoms have appeared, even though it's known that the disease nests in the brain many years before any symptoms are revealed. In advanced stages of the disease, Prof. Rosenblum explains, small lumps (called plaques) are identified forming in the brain from a protein called amyloid. These plaques, he says, are typical of Alzheimer's sufferers and undermine brain functioning. Much research has been directed at understanding these plaques and trying to eliminate them or restrict their formation and growth.

The new study, conducted by research student Yifat Segev in the Laboratory for Research of Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms Underlying Learning and Memory, which is headed by Prof. Rosenblum, in cooperation with Prof. Danny Michaelson of Tel Aviv University, sought to identify factors that could be linked to Alzheimer's even before the irreversible amyloid plaques are formed, and that are connected to the disease's primary risk factor ? age.

A previous study co-authored by Canadian researchers and Prof. Rosenblum's lab at the University of Haifa, revealed that cognitive abilities could be improved by altering the activity of the eIF2alpha protein, which regulates the creation of proteins in all cells, including nerve cells. That research gave Alzheimer's researchers a glimmer of hope: Perhaps it would be possible to improve cognitive abilities or even prevent cognitive damage in Alzheimer's patients at an early stage of the disease by intervening in the mechanisms that regulate protein generation in nerve cells.

The current study compared mice that expressed the human Apoe4 gene - a gene known as a central risk factor for Alzheimer's - with a group of mice with the parallel Apoe3 gene, which does not constitute a risk factor for the disease. Mice in the former group showed a change in the regulating mechanism for protein generation involving the eIF2alpha protein that damaged the cognitive abilities of those mice at a young age. This sort of mechanism change is characteristic of aging, and so also hinted at the tendency of these mice toward premature aging.

According to Segev, this is the first time that a link has been found between the activity of eIF2alpha and the Apoe4 gene in relation to Alzheimer's disease. She noted that modification treatments for the eIF2alpha mechanism are being widely researched and are developing quickly, and so the more we can understand about the connection between this mechanism and Alzheimer's, the more we can find ways to identify and slow the progress of the disease.

HTC Droid Incredible X possibly spotted with Verizon badging intact (Update: DLX could be 'Deluxe')

HTC DLX possibly photographed in its long, long rumored Verizon badging

It's about time. The HTC DLX has most often been rumored carrying a Verizon-style 6435LVW or Droid Incredible X name, and yet it was unveiled first in Japan as the J Butterfly; we really needed the photos just now surfacing at Android Central to remind us that the 5-inch, 1080p gigantophone could still come to Big Red. While nothing's confirmed yet, the black-with-red-trim design and all too prominent Verizon labeling make a convincing case for the DLX's ultimate US destination. A helpfully provided phone profile screen might be more interesting to some, as it hints that we might get the same quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro, 2GB of RAM and 8-megapixel rear camera as in the J Butterfly -- Verizon won't pull a Droid Incredible 4G LTE and tone down the hardware, if this is true. Without any more details, we're still left wondering just how soon Verizon could commit to launching the smartphone. There's no guarantees that Verizon will follow KDDI's schedule and ship in early December.

Update: We've been wondering whether the odd name was meant to be short for Droid Incredible X, i.e. "DIX" instead of "DLX," but our friend @evleaks on Twitter just showed us a list of device PIDs that mentions the latter. @evleaks also suggests that DLX might be short for the codename "Deluxe" for the international variant, just as "ENRC2" was short for "Endeavor C2" (One X+).

Swedish 'Stonehenge' may predate English site

A 5,500-year-old tomb possibly belonging to a Stone Age chieftain has been unearthed at a megalithic monument in the shape of a ship called the Ale's Stenar (Ale's Stones). The tomb, in Sweden, was likely robbed of stones to build the Viking-era ship monument.

"We found traces ? mostly imprints ? of large boulders," said lead archaeologist Bengst S?derberg of the Swedish National Heritage Board. "So my conviction is that some of the stones at least, they are standing on the ship setting."

Perched on a seaside cliff in the village of K?seberga stands the Ales Stenar, also called Ale's Stones, 59 massive boulders arranged in the 220-foot (67-meter)-long outline of a ship. Most researchers believe the 1,400-year-old ship structure is a burial monument built toward the end of Sweden's Iron Age. Local legend has it that the mythic King Ale lies beneath the site.

The Ales Stenar megaliths, some of which weigh as much as 4,000 pounds (1,800 kilograms), have distinctive cut marks similar to ones found at Stone Age sites. So researchers wondered whether the stones were stolen from an even older monument, S?derberg told LiveScience. [ See Photos of Ale's Stones & Tomb ]

In 2006, archaeologists used magnetic sensors and radar to map the area's underground terrain and found a larger circular structure about 541 feet (165 m) in diameter, with a 65-foot by 25-foot rectangle at its heart.

Last week, the team finally dug a small trench through the center of the circle and unearthed the imprints of giant boulders that had been removed long ago. Though the team didn't find a skeleton, the imprints suggested the site was a Neolithic burial chamber called a dolmen ? several upright stones with a horizontal boulder on top in which a body would be placed.

"All of the stones had been taken away. And I would say, most probably they are standing 40 meters away from the dolmen where the ship setting is situated," S?derberg said.

Based on the layout, the dolmen may be up to 5,500 years old ? possibly older than Stonehenge. The large burial chamber likely belonged to a local chieftain or the head of a clan during the Neolithic Era, he said. Because there was very little evidence from the outer ring, the researchers aren?t yet sure what it was used for or whether it?s as old as the dolmen.

Thousands of dolmen sites are scattered throughout Scandinavia, though later civilizations stole many of the boulders to build churches and other structures, he said.

The giant rock monuments suggest that even our Stone Age ancestors had a sense of posterity and permanence, said Magnus Andersson of the Swedish National Heritage Board in an email.

The new tomb also shows that this particular spot, with its dramatic cliffs overlooking the Baltic Sea, has inspired people in many different ages, he said.

Cos. walk a tricky line with endorsements

NEW YORK (AP) ? Nike forgave Tiger Woods after he apologized for cheating on his wife. It welcomed back Michael Vick once he served time for illegal dog-fighting. But the company dropped Lance Armstrong faster than the cyclist could do a lap around the block.

What's the difference? A marketer's prerogative.

The world's largest clothing and footwear maker has stood by athletes through a number of scandals over the years, but this week it became the first company to sever ties with Armstrong in the wake of allegations that he used illegal drugs to boost his performance during his 20-plus year racing career.

At least five other companies followed Nike's lead, highlighting the tricky relationship that evolves when marketers sign multimillion-dollar deals with celebrities and athletes to endorse their products. Everything a celebrity endorser says and does could negatively impact the company he or she represents. And when something goes wrong, companies act as the judge and jury when deciding whether to continue those deals. They consider everything from the offense itself to the fallout.

"The tighter the association and the more intimate the relationship, it can sort of be like breaking up a marriage," said Allen Adamson, managing director of branding firm Landor Associates.

Endorsement deals have been around for decades. The value of such deals are a closely held secret, but companies often shell out millions of dollars for celebrities to wear their shoes, use their equipment or appear in their commercials.

The practice is even more common in the world of sports, where companies are willing to do almost anything to have their brand associated with the high performance of a top athlete. Think: The endorsement deal between sneaker maker Adidas and soccer player David Beckham or General Mills deal to have Olympic Gold medalist Gabby Douglas appear on a box of Corn Flakes cereal.

Companies typically add a "morals clause" to the deals. The specific language can vary, but the clause basically allows a company to cancel the contract if a celebrity does something that reflects poorly on the brand ? or the celebs themselves.

History is dotted with companies dropping celebs after public mishaps. In 1986 the American Beef Industry Council dropped actress Cybil Shepherd as its spokeswoman after she told an interviewer that she tried to avoid red meat in her diet. And in 2007 Verizon severed ties with singer Akon after he drew widespread criticism for a sexually charged dance onstage with a 14-year-old girl during a spring concert in Trinidad.

"It's really hard to know today when an issue will spin out of control or just go away," said Adamson, the branding expert. "The cost of a celebrity endorsement is huge, so pulling the plug is a really big decision."

Sometimes letting go of a celeb can cause a company more problems. For example, apparel and underwear company Hanesbrands dropped Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall from its lineup in 2011 after he made controversial remarks about the death of Osama bin Laden and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks over social media web sites. Mendenhall now is suing the company and seeking $1 million for breach of contract, claiming Hanesbrands wrongly terminated him. The case is still being heard in the U.S. District Court in North Carolina.

Perhaps no other company is better known than Nike for its history of having to decide the marketing fate of its celebrity endorsers. The company with the popular "Just Do It" slogan has been endorsing athletes for most of its 48-year history.

When Nike was founded in 1964, it first got attention by providing shoes to runners. Its first official endorsement was the late-runner Steve Prefontaine in the early 1970s. Nike's most high profile endorsement came in the 1980s when it inked a deal with former professional basketball player Michael Jordan. The deal is widely seen as one of the most successful endorsements of all time.

Nike, which is based in Beaverton, Ore., now spends millions each year on endorsements. Of the $7.4 billion it spent on advertising, promotions and endorsements in the fiscal year that ended in May, 11 percent or $800 million, was for endorsements. That included its sponsorship of activities such as college and professional sports teams.

As a result of its large investment in endorsements, Nike has had to make some tough decisions over the years. It stood by Woods after the golfer admitted to a string of infidelities and had a brief stint in a rehab treatment facility for sex addiction. Nike even made a TV commercial that alluded to his problems, with Wood's deceased father's voice saying: "Did you learn anything?"

Similarly it stuck by the Los Angeles Lakers player Bryant in 2003 after he was arrested on sexual assault charges that were later dropped. Nike, however, didn't use the basketball player in advertising again until 2005.

In the case of Vick, Nike signed the NFL quarterback to a contract during his rookie year in 2001, but ended that pact in August 2007 after he filed a plea agreement admitting his involvement in a dogfighting ring. Then the company re-signed Vick, who now plays with the Philadelphia Eagles, in July 2011. Nike said at that time that it didn't condone Vick's actions, but was supportive of the positive changes he had made to better himself off the field.

In the latest incident, Nike on Wednesday said that it would end its relationship with Armstrong, a week after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency released a massive report that detailed allegations of widespread doping by Armstrong and his teams when he won the Tour de France seven consecutive times from 1999 to 2005.

The move by Nike followed Armstrong's decision earlier on Wednesday to step down as chairman of the Livestrong cancer-fighting organization he founded. Armstrong, a 41-year-old who earlier in his career had overcome life-threatening testicular cancer, retired from cycling a year ago and announced in August that he would no longer fight the doping allegations that have dogged him for years.

Other companies quickly followed Nike. The beer company Anheuser-Busch, health-club operator 24 Hour Fitness, bike manufacturer Trek Bicycle and athletic products maker Honey Stinger all dropped Armstrong. Meanwhile, Oakley, a sunglass maker, said it would withhold judgment until the International Cycling Union decides whether to challenge the USADA's findings.

Steve Rosner, partner at sports marketing firm 16W Marketing in East Rutherford, N.J., estimates that Armstrong could have lost as much as $30 million in present and future endorsement deals, goodwill ambassador relationships and corporate speaking gigs.

Nike declined to comment on its endorsement deal with Armstrong or why it ended the relationship other than to say in a statement it released on Wednesday that it made its decision based on "seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade."

Marketing experts said the likely reason Nike dropped Armstrong boils down to the fact that the cyclist's alleged actions directly related to his sport.

"Nike is about 'just doing it' and that doesn't mean drugs," said Atlanta-based marketing consultant Laura Ries. "It means hard work and ethics. And this flew in the face of it."

Alt-week peels back the covers on some of the more curious sci-tech stories from the last seven days.

Alt-week 20.10.12: our oldest ancestor, the birth of the moon and a planet with four stars

Most mornings, we wake up with little to no idea what happened the day before, let alone last week. Fortunately, they don't let us run important scientific research projects. Or maybe they do, and we just forgot? This week (and most others as it goes) we definitely leave it to the pros, as we get some insightful glimpses at some important origins. Ball Lightning, the moon and even us humans are the benefactors of those tireless scientists, who work hard to explain where it all comes from. There's also a planet with four stars that sees the first few paragraphs of its origin story excitedly written out. One thing we never forget, however, is that this is alt-week.

FAU networking research to improve road safety | University Press

Professor Imad Mahgoub. Photo courtesy of Media Relations.

The future of driving is being shaped by an FAU professor.

Imad Mahgoub, a computer science professor from the university?s department of computer and electrical engineering, received a $330,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) ? the main funding source for scientific research conducted by American colleges and universities ? on Oct. 12. FAU matched the NSF grant with $142,000, for Mahgoub to develop a network that will make driving safer, traffic bearable and cars able to communicate with one another.

The goal of Mahgoub?s study is to improve roadway safety and traffic flow with the hardware and software tools needed to develop a vehicular ad hoc networking testbed on FAU?s Boca campus. In a vehicular ad hoc network, also known as a V.A.N.E.T., vehicles talk to each other wirelessly and they can also talk to roadside units and infrastructure.

This communication between cars enables a vehicle to get warnings of threats that their vehicle is in, like a traffic accident a mile away, to take preemptive actions to avoid being in traffic.

?It would help a lot of people, especially traffic and getting away from more accidents? Tami Nguyen, a junior anesthesiology major, said.

?Similar technology have been used in [Google cars]. Talking about safety, those cars have really traveled on California highways, on regular highways, millions of miles, without a single incident,? College of Engineering and Computer Science Interim Dean Mohammad Ilyas said.

Distracted drivers and pedestrians can be found all over the FAU Boca campus. Professor Imad Mahgoub is looking to make the roads a safer place. Photo by Jordanne Pitter

Mahgoub will be involving students by implementing research and projects in courses related to this study. Courses already being taught in this area include V.A.N.E.T., mobile computing, wireless networking and traffic signal systems and intelligent transportation system classes.

?This project is about the students,? Mahgoub said. ?There is a fund to support PhD. students to work on it. We have courses that are going to benefit from this project of the students who are taking the classes.?

Aleksandar Stevanovic, an assistant professor of civil engineering, is the co-principal investigator of this study. Stevanovic is one of the people responsible for the scientific conduct of this project.

?Students will get the opportunity to learn,? Stevanovic said. ?How some of this cutting edge technology works and what kind of impact will that have on their daily acts.?

Some students can?t wait for this cutting edge technology to impact their lives.

?I would love my car to tell me, ?Hey, accident ahead.? ?Alright cool, let?s get off?? James Eugene, a freshman mechanical engineering major, said.

Colombia's Santos: Land restitution law undermines rebels

BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Friday defended his signature law that returns land seized by illegal armed groups to peasants after leftist rebels assailed the measure at the start of peace talks.

Negotiations to end five decades of war started out bumpy this week when Ivan Marquez, lead negotiator for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, called Santos' restitution law a "trap.

"When these gentlemen from the FARC say this law is a lie it's because ... they know full well that this is something that takes away from one of their propaganda banners," Santos said on his radio program.

One of the FARC's main grievances since taking up arms in 1964 has been the unequal distribution of land, which has been concentrated in the hands of a few since the Spanish conquered the region around the 16th century.

Since coming to power in 2010, Santos' government has pushed through reforms such as the restitution of land to displaced peasants. The move was seen as paving the way for peace talks with the rebels.

Over the conflict's long history, millions of Colombia's rural poor have been forced from their homes by FARC rebels and right-wing paramilitary groups who later used the land to fund their fighting forces.

BOON FOR CORPORATIONS?

On Thursday Colombian government and rebel negotiators agreed to meet in Cuba in mid-November to start what are likely to be difficult talks with the top issues being rural development and land.

Marquez railed against the restitution law at a press conference in Norway.

"Land titles as the current government has designed it are a trap," the guerrilla leader said.

He argued that returning land to peasants who lack the means to make it productive would likely encourage them to sell it cheaply to international corporations.

Various peace efforts in Colombia since the 1980s have brought mixed success, with some smaller armed groups demobilizing. But the FARC, Latin America's biggest rebel group, has pressed on, funded in large part by drug trafficking.

The guerrillas were widely seen to have used previous negotiations to rearm and rebuild their ranks. Right-wing elements linked to Colombia's political establishment also were accused of undermining talks.

The FARC, which traces its roots to the peasant self-defense forces of the 1950s that fought against wealthy landowners, wants to change Colombia's economic system, which Santos' government flatly rules out.

Colombian newspapers and analysts, pointing out the discord between the two sides when talks opened this week in Norway, said the road forward would be very long.

Others were less pessimistic.

"It's important not to over-interpret what the FARC said. They needed to use this as a platform for voicing their political agenda rather than showing flexibility for the talks," said Christian Voelkel, Colombia analyst for the International Crisis Group think tank.

Food and Agriculture: The future of sustainability | Platform for ...

From the Committee on Sustainability Assessment (COSA)

A unique report is now available online ? unique because it is a hard-hitting consensus among very diverse and respected leaders.??Food and Agriculture: The future of sustainability?was released by the U.N. Division for Sustainable Development as a major strategic input to its landmark ?Sustainable Development in the 21st Century? Report.??

Abstract:

Our food systems are no longer sustainable. On our current trajectory, severe disruptions to national and regional food systems are highly probable ? the question is when. This report focuses on vital areas of risk and offers a collection of up-to-date information on the current and likely trends for our global food and agriculture systems. It concludes that to handle growing food demand, it is clear that today?s ?business as usual? is not a viable option. Investing in more of the same will not give us different or better results. Agriculture is at the threshold of a necessary paradigm shift and yet, we have not fundamentally altered the way we measure, understand, and incentivize our agricultural systems. A very diverse-thinking group of more than 70 agri-food leaders in the business, policy, ?green,? and social arenas contributed their vision and bold ideas. By opening the silos of partisan thinking to invite reasoned discussion, this report exposes areas of disagreement and reveals many areas of common agreement about strategic options ?that are available right now. It also lays out specific ?high impact? areas where smart decisions will make the most difference for more sustainable and resilient food and agriculture systems.

The key points are distilled in this 2-page Policy Brief on Food and Agriculture: The future of sustainability Download PDF

Nine key areas of consensus have emerged as the key paths of action:

  1. Organized small and medium farmers, fully including women farmers, should be a primary focus of investment ? recognizing that private enterprise will play a significant role in many solutions
  2. Define the goal in terms of human nutrition rather than simply ?more production?
  3. Pursue high yields within a healthy ecology ? they are not mutually exclusive and policy and research must reflect that
  4. Impel innovation and the availability of diverse technologies suitable in different socioeconomic and ecological contexts
  5. Significantly reduce waste along the entire food chain
  6. Avoid diverting food crops and productive land for biofuels, but explore decentralized biofuel systems to promote energy and livelihood security that also diversify and restore rural landscapes
  7. Insist on intelligent and transparent measurement of results ? we cannot manage what we cannot measure
  8. Develop and adapt public and private institutions that can effectively respond to these new goals
  9. Motivate and reward investments and business systems that result in measurable impacts to the

"Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane to host Oscars

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Outspoken comedian Seth MacFarlane, creator of "Family Guy", will host the Oscars ceremony in February in a choice seen aimed at attracting younger viewers to the movie industry's biggest night.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which produces the Oscars, announced the selection on Monday of first-time host MacFarlane, known for his no-holds-barred humor and cultural satire on "Family Guy".

Oscars telecast producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a statement they picked MacFarlane, 38, because "his performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh," calling him the "consummate host".

"My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don't find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast," Macfarlane said in a statement, alluding to a televised sendup of Sheen on the Comedy Central channel.

The Academy Awards, which will next take place on February 24, 2013, are the highest honors in the movie business and the hosting job is a coveted spot, held in the past by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Johnny Carson and Steve Martin.

The Academy has struggled in recent years to appeal to a younger audience. Rookie hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco were drafted in for the 2011 ceremony but the show became one of the least-watched Academy Awards in the past decade, drawing 37.6 million Americans, and critics slammed the young hosts.

More than 39 million Americans tuned in to watch Oscars veteran Billy Crystal take the helm this year, but some critics called the show old-fashioned.

Comedian MacFarlane rose to fame and gained a cult following as the creator of Fox's edgy comedy animated series "Family Guy," which follows the outrageous antics of Peter Griffin and his dysfunctional family.

MacFarlane has come under fire from watchdog groups including the Parents Television Council, who regularly feature "Family Guy" on their "worst prime-time shows for family viewing" on grounds it may include "gratuitous sex" or "obscene language".

He made his directorial debut on the big screen this year with "Ted," an R-rated comedy film starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, about a pot-smoking, foul-mouthed teddy bear.

"Family Guy," which attracts a strong audience in the coveted 18-34 year old demographic, has in the past depicted former U.S. President Bill Clinton smoking marijuana and a barbershop quartet singing about AIDS, as well as mocking various religions.

The success of "Family Guy" led MacFarlane to create two animated spin-off series, "The Cleveland Show" and "American Dad".

MacFarlane, who voices the characters of Peter, Brian and Stewie on "Family Guy," has often embraced song and dance numbers on the animated show and has hosted "Rat Pack"-themed nights at his home in Los Angeles where he performs.

He has also performed to sold-out audiences at London's Royal Albert Hall and New York's Carnegie Hall, and earned two Grammy nominations for his debut 2011 album, "Music is Better Than Words".

The World's Top Reference Software Programs ~ warshetotoglexx

Why should a computer have a good reference software program? It is because a professional reference program will be more credible than something that can be found on a typical website. This is especially true because many leading authorities work to compile reference software that is up to date and accurate. Here is a look at some of the top reference software programs. Some of these work as simple dictionaries or encyclopedias, but others can work for other services like travel or taxes.

Microsoft?s Encarta series of virtual encyclopedias has been seen as one of the top reference software programs of all time. It is updated every year, and it even allows for free updates for certain users. This program can be easily integrated with other programs in the Microsoft Office series, including Word and PowerPoint. Web search assistance for more information on topics in the encyclopedia is also featured through Encarta.

Some of the top reference software programs includes dictionaries that can help with not only the English language but also various other foreign languages. While English language dictionaries from groups as Random House and Oxford are available there are foreign language programs that can help educate people on how to speak different languages. Rosetta Stone?s foreign language programs are among the top reference software programs in that thirty different languages are covered. These languages range from common ones like Spanish and French to languages like Hebrew and Welsh.

Some of the top reference software programs work to educate people on computer processes. Learn2, which is located at tutorials.com, has all sorts of programs that teach users about how to use certain computer processes. This includes using Microsoft Office programs, Lotus spreadsheet programs and even basic computer use lessons.

There are programs that are popular for travel planning too. Unlike a typical atlas, one of these programs can give detailed instructions on how to get from one point to another with information on all sorts of hotels, restaurants and other attractions on the way. Microsoft Streets and Trips is the most popular program in this category. Not only does this include updated information but it also allows for free online updates regarding construction and GPS compatibility.

The last of the types of top reference software programs involves that of tax preparation software. Every year the federal tax code will change and several new things will appear in the code. To keep up with all of these changes it is important that the right reference software programs be used for this. In fact, the best ones will help a user to find out new information that can help to get the person to save money on taxes or to get a greater return.

TurboTax and TaxCut are clearly the most popular tax reference programs available. These programs work to help educate people on tax law changes and can help them with filing their taxes without having to go to a local tax specialist. This can definitely help get a person to save money.

Those are some of the top reference software programs to choose from. Not only do these top reference software programs help to provide education through standard dictionary and encyclopedia services but they can also help to educate people on foreign languages. Those who do not know how to use a computer can be helped through tutorial software, and even trip and tax planning can be handled. These types of reference programs are ones that all computer users should consider having.
